Some Of The Things To Do Outdoors

BROWNSVILLE EVENTS
There are several recreational and endurance events that our town hosts throughout the year.
Ascutney Outdoors - our local community organization that oversees operations of Mt Ascutney and is the gateway to the mountainside trail network. It serves a wide variety of recreational activities and events, cultural activities, and educational programs. Full calendar of events on Mt Ascutney.
In the winter months, Ascutney Outdoors offers affordable downhill skiing and tubing, perfect for families, when there is natural snow cover. Please, check their Instagram before heading to the mountain.
Ascutney Outdoors also serves as a base camp for mountain biking. Our mountain offers over 35 miles of trails, that were planned and built by Ascutney Trails Association. Status of the trails, maps and access points can be found here.
GNAR Weasels offers classic Vermont XC mountain bike racing with high-intensity competitive cycling through picturesque terrain and takes place is June.

Ragnar Trail Vermont runs in July.

The Vermont 100 is one of America's oldest 100-milers. It is part of the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning and is the only remaining 100-miler that includes a concurrent horse race. It takes place in July.
A 3-day Flow State - The Vermont Mountain Bike Festival is also in July. Singletrack, live music, local food, Vermont beer, camping and community.
Vermont Overland is a gravel bike race and a trail run that takes place in August.
Vermont 50 is a very popular mountain bike race and an ultra run. Combine your visit with early leaf peeping atthe end of September.
New addition to the calendar is Mt Ascutney Vertical Backyard ultra race. It is a "last person standing" type of event. It takes place in November.
HIKING
Most trails allow leashed dogs
Mt Ascutney State Park offers access to the top of Mt Ascutney. Climb the observation tower for sweeping views of Northern New England. Easier hike to the top can be attempted from the parking lot at the top of the State Park access road.
West Windsor Town Forest (Bicentennial Trail) gives you another, less crowded way to the top of Mt Ascutney.
Ascutney Trails Association keeps miles of trails open for everyone, thanks to local volunteers.
Mile Long Field is a privately owned field that allows public access. It offers a beautiful hike and is dog friendly.
Paradise Park in Widsor is only 10 min away. It has a system of easy trails and a small lake.
Quechee Gorge is Vermont's deepest gorge, and is worth a visit for a spectacular view and an easy hike.
You can combine your visit to Billing's Farm and Museum with hiking Mt Tom and The Pogue.
Another option in Woodstock is the Mount Peg Foot and Bridle Trails that offer an easy, high-reward outing.
For the hiking enthusiasts, The Long Trail runs the spine of the Green Moutnains and has several access points within a 45 min drive. The Appalachian Trail joins it for part of the way, and then take a turn East to New Hampshire. 
Trail Finder is a great resource for any additional hiking trails.
ALPINE SKIING
Ascutney Outdoors offers affordable downhill skiing and tubing on weekends, perfect for families, when there is natural snow cover. Please, check their Instagram before heading to the mountain.
Okemo mountain is only 19 miles away and is the closest resort for the holders of Epic pass. 
Saskadena Six, formerly known as Suicide Six is a family friendly ski area located in Woodstock, just a short drive away. 
KIllington Mountain - the largest ski area in New England and a member of ICON pass resorts is only 30 miles away.
Pico Mountain is located right next to Killington, and offers another great option for skiing. 
Magic Mountain is the closest ski resort to Springfield, and offers great family friendly skiing.
Bromley Mountain Ski Resort is only 30 miles from our Scandinavian Serenity Home.
NORDIC SKIING
Ascutey Outdoors offers free access to trails at Mile Long Field. Trails are groomed for freestyle skiing only. Classic trails are made by skiers in front of you. 
Woodstock Nordic Center is operated by Woodstock Inn and offers groomed trails, ski lessons, guided tours and equipment rentals.
Viking Nordic Center is only 25 miles away from Springfield, and has groomed trails, night skiing and equipment rentals.
MOUNTAIN AND GRAVEL BIKING (AND BIKE SHOPS)
Around Ascutney Outdoors Center, you’ll find about 35 miles of mapped and marked mountain bike trails and a skills park. These trails were carefully planned and built by the mountain bike enthusiasts at the Ascutney Trails Association.
Majority of our town's, as well as surrounding area roads are gravel and are perfect for a day of cycling offering beautiful vistas and quaint Vermont scenery.  
Woodstock Area Mountain Bike Association (WAMBA) is another great resource for mountain and gravel riding. 
Vermont Mountain Bike Association (VMBA) is your destination for finding the best trails.
Arrowhead Trails is a small but challenging MTB area in the neighbouring Claremont NH.

In need of a new bike, a tune-up or a quick repair - head to The Wheel House for the best service around.
HORSE RIDING
Green Mountain Horse Association has been a hub for competitive, educational, and recreational equestrian sport in Vermont and beyond. They host events across five disciplines—dressage, driving, eventing, hunter/jumpers, and trail riding on over 1000 miles of trails - the largest and the most diverse trail system in New England.

WATER
Great River Outfitters in Windsor offer Connecticut River kayak tours and kayak rentals. 
For swimming holes and river access your best resource is Vermont River Conservancy
If you like pond or lake swimming, the town of Windsor has a town beach on Kennedy Pond with plenty of parkind and facilities. Windsor Rec Center also offers swim lessons.
For access points to boating and fishing areas, it is best to check the Vermont Fish and Wildlife website.
AIR
If you are into hang gliding, Mt Ascutney is a premier hang gliding destination in our area. More info can be found here.
Morningside Flight Park in Charlestown, NH offers hang gliding lessons and other air related activities.
If you want to experience a hot air balloon ride, Queechee Balloon Rides offers rides twice a day.
